We weren't very well off either, but we always had eggs for breakfast because Dad kept hens. Sometimes bacon and eggs, the bacon coming from another relative who kept pigs. Toast of course and a favourite drink was blackcurrant juice with sugar and hot water because, you guessed it, Dad grew blackcurrants. In fact we always ate well thanks to his efforts in the garden. Later, when I was 11, we bought a glasshouse property and he grew tomatoes and we had an orchard and a big vegie garden. This is why growing food is in my blood to this day.
