Anna Pavlova the ballerina toured New Zealand and the desert was made at that time and named after Pavlova herself, deemed to be as light as air.
Kiwifruit: one of the biggest marketing blunders of all time. Chinese Gooseberries, prevalent in New Zealand gardens and one of the warm memories of childhood. In the 70's this fruit was renamed Kiwifruit and grew to be a huge export product.

Unfortunately, so much money was invested into the growing of the fruit and the logistics of exporting around the world that someone, somewhere omitted to B R A N D this scrumptious fruit. Thus 'Kiwifruit' is now the generic name of the aforementioned Chinese Gooseberry and anyone from anywhere can grow hairy berries and call them kiwifruit. This of course diminishes the Kiwi connection. Of course, the Chinese made the same mistake sometime earlier in the history of the fruit
When kiwifruit are in season I can buy lovely export quality fruit at my local supermarket...usually 2 for $US1.

At the moment there are some shrivelled up little South American ones in store - or the undersized Californian ones. They are the same price!!! I spoke to a produce guy about them once and, to my chagrin, he told me he had no idea that New Zealand Kiwifruit were any different to kiwifruit from any other part of the world. They were simply 'kiwifruit'.
Oh Shame New Zealand!!
