I used to use a pressure cooker way back when I had all of the family at home Janann. It was of course the old fashioned type with the little release valve on the top of the lid. It was good for stewing up cheap cuts, yes, and also for vegetables. it was said to be the healthiest method of cooking because all of the goodness was sealed in, and didn't get poured away down the drain with the water. And of course, the big advantage was that it was quick. It would have been great for working mothers but in all honesty, I don't know that you would achieve anything better with one than you can with your slow cookers of today really.
There were certain things that I really liked doing with the pressure cooker like , as someone else mentioned, it made wonderful pea and ham soup. Any soups using lentils was great done that way in fact. I also used to be able to fit presserving jars in mine, so it was very handy when you had a small surplus of any fruit or vegetables that you wanted to preserve. But even though I liked it, I do love my slow cooker better!!! I love coming home from work, on a miserable winter's evening , and being greeted by the delicious aroma of something that I had thrown into the crock pot in the morning before leaving for work. After a busy day, it is just so relaxing to know that all one has to do, is to pour the glass of wine, and thicken the sauce and dinner is ready. One can eat it when one is ready to. It will not spoil, or burn, and there is nothing to rush or bust over. You don't have to stand over watching it, and if you want to, you can go and have a nice hot shower and get into a comfy housecoat and slippers before setting up your tray to go watch your favourite soapie while eating. And, there is a lot less dishes to clear up afterwards ! Love my crockpot !
