Just changing the leading thread really so I thought I would tell you what had my dear old friend who will be 90 next birthday , laughing her had off at me today after I had explained myself properly .
I had taken her for a coffee on my way home from work, and she asked me if I had a recipe for a pudding her mother used to make (yea.. I did give her a funny look, she's 90, how old would her mother have been, and just how good does she think my memory is !! Anyway,
she said, " Oh I wish I could remember how she made it , it was so delicious and so comforting during the cold winter months, and I have been fancying it quite often lately. She called Hungry Boys Pudding and I have been looking for it for years. " I said that I had not heard of it before, and I said that I could remember all the diffent puddings that my own mum used to make, and how sometimes I too wished Mum was still alive to make the ones called "Spotted Dick," and " Queen Pudding , " and then when I was describing a particular favourite of mine , I finished by saying, " Oh... it was so lovely , especially when mum used to put mam 'n jerang on top. That made it real special!.
My friend looked puzzled for a moment and then said, " I don't think we ever had that one, never got many exotic fruits in our house, it was usually stewed apples, or plums that we got , or just plain old marmalade.
It was only after I played what I had said back in my mind, that I realised I had said " Mam n Jerang instead of Jam and Merangue, and that to her that sounded very exotic !
Crumbs, and I had not even had a drink !
We both had a good giggle together over that gaff.

Your mam n jerang does sound exotic Kate
Reminds me of a hymn we used to sing at school where the words were 'flowing from his side' mixed with 'gushing from his side' to sound like 'flushing from his side'. To teenage girls in the 70s, sounded hilarious.
But anyway my lifetime favourite comfort food is mince and cheese pie with a freshly made fresh cream long doughnut....yum!! Havent had them in a very long while but if I had it now I would order a large latte with it

Hahahahahahhahahaha love it Kate and EllieA, dyslexic words can be so entertaining if confusing.
That 90 year old sweetie sounds as if she has her pins and needles in order though..

Aweee... Ellie, my friend and I would have given a lot for a good old meat pie kiwi style - while we were away. Our taste buds got very jaded towards the end, and we both longed for some of our old favourites like that. A donut - a proper one with lashings of cream and icing sugar, with a nice little spoonful of jam tucked into it's split would have gone down a treat too. And bread. We missed our lovely breads soooo much.

I know what you mean, KKKaty. During our trip to Britain we just couldn't face another meal out. It was the same old, same old unless we sold one of our children and paid to an expensive restaurant meal. There were chips with absolutely everything rxcept the Chinese and Indian dishes. We even found, believe it or not, a Chinese place that did serve chips on the side. . I longed for some plain vegetable soup and a piece of toast, or, as you say, a Kiwi pie.
