Pies 10 Months ago
I am sick of seeing how to make mayonnaise whenever I come on , so am changing the subject in the food chain.
PIES !
What is your favourite pie ?
Two news items this regarding pies. One , that Georgie Pies may be making a come-back. Heard that one before only it didn't happen then, but maybe it will this time. Were any of you GP fans too ?
The second pie I heard about was that a fruit pie actually won the top pie award this year. An apple, plum and port pie I think it was made in a tiny place called Kihikihi. A joint effort between husband who made the pastry, and his wife who perfected the filling.. It is a bit off the beaten track for us to go to try what has officially been declared the best pie in the country, so good for Kihikihi
Certainly a break from the usual tradition, but do you think that a fruit pie as opposed to the usual meat pie, will put them on the map though ?
Are all of the big burly truck drivers who would make up the bulk of the traffic passing through, pull their big rigs off the road, to get themselves a fruit pie to feed their inner men ?
Perhaps they would buy a steak pie in Hamilton and then stop for a pudding pie in Kihikihi ?

You are dead right about the truckies knowing where the best pies are in any town Katy.
When we were on any long trip and when we got hungry my father always said that for the best food of any sort, to look for the place where all the truckies were stopping. Best steaks , best fish and chips, and best service usually as well.
My favourite pie is mince and cheese. Nothing like one on a cold day so long as the pastry is not all soggy and greasy. We have a bakery that uses a flakey top pastry but the bottom one more of short crust kind. that works well for me and not so messy to eat.
Pies are not meant to, and should not be eaten with a knife and fork. Well that is what I think about pies any how.

I am really pleased a fruit pie won the competition this year too.

My favourite G.P?

Tops?...apple pie with that lovely crisp pastry.

We used to drive to Riccarton all those years ago for Georgie Pies.

Fattening, ... satisfying but delish, as an occasional treat. Who the hell cares anyway. I'll eat them if I want to

Mince and cheese any brand. I eat the lid first, then eat the inside with a spoon, then savour the rest of the pastry eating it slowly, yummm

sometimes I have eaten the inside first, then put all the pastry into a sandwich with tomato sauce lol

Now I've heard everything. A pastry sandwich!!!! Can't be worse than a chip sandwich I suppose and my DH is addicted to those, with tomato sauce. I like a potato crisp sandwich myself. My favourite pies where the one I used to buy when I was working years agoi. Flaky pastry, full of meat, gravy and vegetables. Fifty years have gone by and I still remember. I wonder if they have any left?

A filled roll with Potato crisp, vegemite and chesdale cheese filling. Yum !.
Talking of pies. Do you have any Jester Pie Franchises in Christchurch ?
Now they have a few in their range that I am quite happy to cross the road to get my chompers around. As some of them have the heart foundations health tick, you can enjoy them without feeling so guilty about it as well .
Not that I ever feel guilty really. I am a bit like you in that respect Lucky1. If I feel like a pie, I will have a pie . It is certainly not an every day, or even an every week thing with me. Just now and again, and usually only on a cold miserable day, do I even think of eating a pie.
I think with Georgie Pies, it was because they were a very reasonable price if I remember correctly, so often after netball or soccer on a Saturday, the family would have a Georgie Pie fix. I am sure we would do it again if they ever came back again. too, only they will never ever be $1 each again.
