Any suggestions? 1 Year, 10 Months ago
|
|
|
My husband's tests came back this week and his cholesterol level (count?) is high. We don't really eat fat - a bit of olive oil for cooking. We do eat a lot of meat and eggs and cheese. We don't eat pies, pizza and fast food at all.
Any ideas? I'm not the world's best nurse.

Liz, my best suggestion is to reduce the dairy food. Butter , cream, and cheeses in particular. Instead of butter use one of the spreads that claim to actually lower the cholesterol. I use Pro Active Light. I also found that when I started taking Omega 3 capsules for another reason ( arthritis) that in fact I produced lower Cholesterol results as a bonus. I asked the woman in the health shop if that could happen, or was it coincidental, and she said that it was a known fact that Omega 3 was good for heart health as well as for joints. Eat more Grainy bread, oatmeal for breakfast, and exercise they say. Some people do say eggs should be avoided too, but, I don't really hold with that... unless he eats a lot of eggs, like more than the average, I wouldn't worry too much about a normal consumption of eggs . I eat about 3 a week usually. I think that would be an acceptable level , maybe even a couple more would be in fact.

All that and a life of less stress..helps. It is not always just our diet that increases the rates of cholesterol, but surely helps to follow what KKKaty suggests too..
I have a friend with raging high rates, (10) she is slim as a reed and fit..well thought she was, with her walks and jogs and lifestyle..I think some are more prone than others.
Has your husband's doctor made any suggestions on how to lower his high levels?

HI, Thanks so far. Taking all advice. Doctor wants to put him on tablets. We don't really want to go that route - my husband first wants to try and see what he can do on a day to day basis. Our thinking: once on medication always on medication and if there's another way we'll prefer that. Off to supermarket today and will be thinking more than ever what to buy.

I used to have high cholesterol, but my *good* cholesterol was also high, so that balanced out the *bad.
Using those lowering margarines, Pro Active & Logicol, lowered mine to normal levels too, but an added combo that really did the trick of normalising, was the eating of honey & cinnamon on toast every morning.
Taken initially for aching joints, but got the added lowering of cholesterol..

How has it been going with the war on cholesterol Liz18 ? And also the aching joints.? Some of those anti cholesterol drugs can be responsible for muscular aches too you know. Your hubby will be better off if he can find something else instead of taking statins.
My dad has the same problems.
