Hotels in Hong Kong? 5 Years, 9 Months ago
Has anyone been to Hong Kong recently and can recommend a decent but not expensive hotel to stay at? I am spending a couple of days on Hong Kong Island at the end of June and want some ideas.

Sounds exciting Erin, good for you! I have been to HK many times but not recently. Also each time I went it was on a business trip so stayed in Hotels such as The Peninsula Hotel, or the Hong Kong Hotel which were beautiful but expensive at the time. I will ask my daughter over the weekend if she has any suggestions , and then I will get back to you. She works in the industry and knows her way around HK pretty well. So watch this space...

Erin depends how tight a budget you are on. My daughter is used to booking business visitors to HK now and usually they are not that limited by budget. When she was working in Europe she used to do a lot more tourist type bookings and she said there is a rent room style accomodation which the swiss used a lot so it would have to be very clean and was available short or long term, with serviced or non serviced rooms. All had ensuites and it was central and very reasonable in price. She has never stayed there herself though, that is the only thing, but she never heard any complaints either. If you are looking for budget accomodation, just make sure that it has aircon because some don't and it is pretty essential for comfort there. Also check on the distances from airport, and rail transport and the Star Ferry terminal too. You might find cheaper accomodation and find you are paying out heaps more to sightsee and get around. This place is just of Nathan Rd which is one of the main drags. Have a look at www.rentaroomhk.com. We will have to get together soon so you can tell us all more!

Thanks KKK-Katy. I have decided that I will pay a bit extra and stay in a nice hotel, sort of a treat for myself. And I have found that you can buy a tourist transport pass that gives you the trip from and to the airport and unlimited metro travel around the city. I also found a tour that takes you around the main highlights and picks you up at the hotel. And of course there is the shopping! I am really looking forward to my holiday. And we will have to get together soon. I hope that you are feeling better, I know exactly how hard it is to pull yourself back up when you are feeling really low.

Hi Erin. If you want to get a feel for hotle prices in Hongkong, you could look around the following sites: wotif.com, lastminute.com, ratestogo.com. When I travel, I pretty well always am able to get good accommodation at reduced prices through these sites. And of course, it might be even cheaper to buy the accommodation as part of a package with the flights through say, travel.co.nz, or through a travel agent. I don't know how these packages are so cheap!.

Anyway, lucky you. I'd love to go to Hongkong. I do hope you have a wonderful time. Please let us know how your planning is going.

I'd go ape if I had the chance to go to NZ, or AUST, or even sweeden.....

Well I'm just glad you all can do that and no I'm not envious at all. I just enjoy the pictures of the places......So Erin you get the best hotel and have a ball there and enjoy every min. of it.

Many of us would have to save for year to get to Hong Kong too, or even over the Tasman Sea to each other down under..it is further for us to travel from here to anywhere, and NZ is a small land mass, forgiven.. just these 'blase' travel trippers who whip off here and there ..I am sure they too saved for the journeys.. Hong Kong is a long way away...

I'm sure Hong Kong will be alot more expensive come summer...the Olympics will skew the hotel prices for sure.
