Verbal warning 2 Years, 11 Months ago
Sometimes honesty is not the best policy.

I received a verbal warning out of no where yesterday as I left work an hour early the other day and noted it on my time sheet, so not to be paid.

If I'd left my time sheet no one would be any the wiser.

Everyone else had gone for the day by 2.30pm I stayed longer although I feel unsafe working on my own.

I was so dumb founded I said nothing, should I have said something?

Yes I think you should at least point out that in your honesty, you did not try and claim extra hours which you did not work.
Your boss, or superviser or whoever it was that gave you a verbal for that, is being completely unfair. What a lousy boss!
Was this boss person not there at the time for you to gain permission to leave early, or what was the situation there ?
If he / she was not there, and you filled in your time sheet for the correct number of hours that you WERE there for, then what was his / her gripe ? I don't think he has grounds to give verbal warnings for that, and it should tell him that you are an honest person whocan be trusted .
I would ask him why he does not approve of honesty. It is always hard to dob in others whom you work alongside with, but there is nothing to stop you from telling him that he should be keeping a closer eye on the ones who do NOT fill in their time cards, fairly or honestly.
You don't have to name names, that is for him to find out by taking more notice of what is going on himself!.

Once upon a time we had unions who could sort this out for you. If that is the full story , he wouldn't get far. In this economic plunge there will likely be bosses out there just looking for excuses to lower their staff so they do not have to pay redudancy.

I was wondering how the original poster of this thread got on ? You asked us all if you should have said something and some of us replied to you with our thoughts regarding your problem. If you are still looking in here, how about giving those of us who responded to your query, with their opinions , some idea of what your position was in the finish please. ?

Thanks for your replies. I decided to say nothing more for now as I don't want to rock the boat for now. I know that the correct procedure was not used for issuing of a warning and if need be I shall bring this up.

My boss was not there to ask permission, although she granted me permission to do the same thing a few weeks earlier.

However for now I have a meeting tomorrow regarding restructuring so who knows what's going to happen. We were advised of this in early December and it's taken 3 months to reach this stage with only 3 staff involved.

I wish I could say more, just don't feel safe to do so, and yes I do wish that I belonged to a union.
