What CAN I be thinking? 5 Years ago
I must be mad, girls - quiet, you in the cheap seats! I'm working in a job I love, but I'm currently updating my CV with a view to applying for the soon to be vacated field officer's position with the local branch of the Stroke Foundation. It's only 20 hours a week (I'm currently working 22 - 24 p/w), but I'm pretty sure the hourly rate will be such that I'm earning a little more for working slightly fewer hours. Chances are that, me being me, I'll wind up doing plenty of unpaid hours as well, but that's something I'm already doing, so really isn't too much of a concern. In taking onthe field officer's job. I would be stepping waaay outside of my comfort zone, and that's a frightening prospect, but I keep telling myself that 2 years ago, my current job too, seemed similarly beyond me. I guess I'll practise what I'm so fond of preaching, and feel the fear and do it anyway. Wish me luck, Girls.

Hery Jode, if you truly love what you are doing, you would not be thinking of changing. I suspect that although you enjoy the job and like the people, you may no longer feeling challenged and are just a bit bored.

If there is any good reason for you to go after this other job, then go for it! Of course you can do it if you want to. If you could learn one new job, you should be able to learn another new job. It is allied, even though different.

So, no you are not mad. Good luck!!!!

You go for it, Jode. This job sounds like it's got your name on it. May I suggest that if you get it, you bill them for hours worked over your limit. There is no need for you to work extra without being recognised for it. It's something I regularly do now and I feel it makes my employer value me more because I am putting a value on my worth. Just a suggestion anyway and good luck. Let us know how you get on.

Thanks girls - I really do love my current job, but I'm frustrated by the funding restrictions which mean I'm paid only for the hours I actually work with clients - all preparation is done in my own time - I don't HAVE to do it, but I'm damned if I'll give my clients 2nd rate service because that's as much as the funding agencies think they deserve. And I'm really missing the one-on-one coaching I used to do before I took on the computer supervisor's job. Dealing with a room full of brain injured students is a whole lot more stressful than dealing with them one at a time, and most of the work in this new job would be one on one. I asked my boss for a reference today and while he says he doesn't want to lose me, he also reckons I have all the skills and the personality to make a good fist of the field officer's job. My application will be in the post on Monday, and then I'll be answering the phone with my best posh telephone voice every time it rings until I get a call from the Stroke Foundation.

Good one Jode. I actually cut a couple of job ads from the paper last night after reading your post. I don't think I will follow them up though as I think I know both the places and not that keen to work with either set of existing people.

My written application must've impressed 'em, coz I've been called in for an interview at 1.30 tomorrow. Just calculated that it's been 20 years since my last real job interview ("real" being where I don't know the people doing the interviewing) - that's a scary prospect, but I'll give it my best shot. Any positive vibes you can spare would be greatly appreciated.
