Third time lucky??? - the "in the wars" update 6 Years, 1 Month ago
Hi dear friends – for those old-timers (RW wise), and at the risk of boring you, here’s an update on heath matters. Tune out now if you wish!
I last posted here in mid-late January, upon my return from the 3 months in rehab. I was at home for 3 weeks, at the end of which I enjoyed a lovely night with Mrs W (KKKKatie), Kelsgirl, Jackie, Jode and Lynda at the Auckland dinner. A few days later I knew I was in trouble and took myself back to hospital. The pins in my hip (following neck of femur op) had moved 45 degrees so I was given a total hip replacement in the week following Waitangi weekend … something I was apparently destined to have within two years anyway. So, despite feeling that the previous 3+ months in the wheelchair in rehab had been wasted, at least I had a sturdy hip to take me into the future. Precisely a week after returning home I was put on strong antibiotics when it was discovered that my wound site was infected. Unsteady on my crutches and gutter frame anyway, I was taking heavy duty painkillers and heavy duty antibiotics and … fainted, crashing heavily. Just when I was congratulating myself (on the floor at 11pm) for not dislocating the new hip I came to the very painful realisation that my foot was at a right angle to my ankle. Another ambulance trip for another op … the second in two weeks and third in four months.
So now … the original plate and pins from the femur have been removed; I’ve a new ceramic/titanium hip, and have a plate and five pins in my other (!!) ankle. One would think I could have broken the ankle on the same dud leg, then at least I’d have a “good leg”, but no, that’s not how things happen with me.
In early March I returned to (the same) rehab, again on the non-weight-bearing scheme. Had I not lived alone up 14 steps, and not had a new hip, I'd have been able to return home. So, have been playing things veerrrrrrrrry carefully as I figure this is absolutely make or break time in terms of future mobility. Today I went to the surgeon and was cleared for weight-bearing so will return home Friday or Saturday this week, on crutches still and in my extremely glamourous moonboot. Once I’m truly back on my feet I’ll be given a bone scan to test for osteoporosis.
Once again in rehab I've had far too much time on my hands to spend on the puter, particularly Trademe [and bye the bye, didn’t wee Sam do well touting it for $700k, well done lad!!]
Regulars will know how much I was longing to get back to work in February; now I’m looking forward to doing so on 1 May. Bring it on. I miss the students and my colleagues like crazy.
I've beem thinking lots about Shabhonmom and Australia’s Chookie … I hope you ladies are well and mobile, or at the very least, much better than you were, as well as Luana. Was thrilled to read this week that you are much better and much more positive Luana!
Now, given that all this orthopaedic drama started with my moving furniture in September - inching a heavy bed to and fro, to and fro .... you can betcha that my housework efforts will be significantly reduced!!
