Hi Everyone, since joining Realwomen I have enjoyed reading the many stories from amazing women. So I thought I'd include my story in hope that it would inspire and encourage many of the readers out there to never give up on their dream. Well I won't go too far back in my journey but the most recent adventure my husband and I have moved into was starting our new business. 2005 was the year of huge changes. I returned from Sydney in March after attending a women's conference called the Colour Conference with my girlfriends and I was inspired to come back home and use “what was in my hands” to do something that would be inspiring and encouraging to others. Well little did I know when I returned from Sydney, my husband also had a change in heart with his position at work. He shared that he was sick of working for a boss and wanted to be his own boss. When he shared this, my response was totally out of the ordinary, normally it would be, how are we going to survive or what about the mortgage, but my response was "that's great honey, what kind of business do you want to do", his reply was "whatever you would like honey". Now, I just got back from a Women's Conference and so I was already fired up to get my hands into something new - well this was definitely my opportunity. Automatically I said I have always loved clothing so I blurtted out FASHION FOR THE FULLER SIZE WOMEN!!!
I'm definitely a Realwomen and have been a fuller size woman my whole life. I have struggled to find beautiful, stylish and unique garments for myself so I would use a dressmaker to make my garments. So when I said to my husband I wanted to do fashion for the fuller size women, amazing things started to take place. Now just so you know, my husband has worked 18 years in the fashion industry providing beautiful fabrics to well known designers and suppliers in NZ and Australia so his knowledge and connections were already set in place. My background is in the legal sector working as a legal secretary and recently administrator. So my experience was that I loved clothing and had a good eye for style. We are also parents to Josiah 8 yrs and Sylvana 6yrs. For us, it was a matter of us agreeing and stepping out of our comfort and testing the waters.
Well to cut a very long story short, we began selling to friends and family from our rumpus room at home and then we changed our garage into a studio and sold more to the public. After doing this for 2 years, the opportunity came for us to move into our very own store which meant this was no longer a hobby but the real deal. So today we are working hard to grow our business and we have a passion to be a well known provider of designer wear for the significant women and men. The quote I leave you is one that my husband and I believe in and also the reason why we are doing this. "What we walk in today, Our children will run in it tomorrow" - so we want to show our children that they too can make a difference when opportunities come their way and to always give it a go.
