My bestfriend and I are going to LA, the Grand Canyon and Las Vegas on the 1st ish of August. Any advice on accommodation eg b&b, hostels and hotels near the Grand Canyon and in Las Vegas will be much appreciated. In LA I will be staying with family.

Hi Ellieann............ So happy to hear your going to come to my world............. Will see what I can find out about vegas for you as I use to go quite often but been ages............ Bring plenty of summer clothes as it will be hot........You probably will be going past my turn off. Maybe we could meet or you come to my home.....Depending on the way you go. I'd assume you'd go the shortest............LA is about four hours from me.......... ,maybe a little longer. Will ask DH........ Will be in touch.

I havent booked anything yet but this is the sort of plan:

1. I spend a week in Oceanview (somewhere in California!) with my niece and her children and grandchildren
2. I meet up in LA (maybe) with my bestfriend Brigid who is coming from her holiday in Ireland to:
catch up with her news from her holiday and for her to have a rest and recover from her Ireland trip
3. Brigid and I will then go to a Hostel (I've seen some lovely B&Bs and Hostels on the net) in or near the Grand Canyon for three nights
4. Spend seven nights in Las Vegas where we are thinking of staying at the 'Sahara'.
5. Return to LA for flight home to Auckland then Wellington.

How exciting, Ellieann. Have never been so can't advise but I'm sure these lovely American friends of ours will be able to help you out. But I'd watch that Forgiven chick. She's a bit of a wild one!!!

Where do you live Forgiven? Is in between anywhere I'm going? I have to get a photo of you (and me)

I can meet you some time before the 1st Aug when I need to be at the LA airport to meet Brigid. Once I've done my bookings I'll have a better idea where I can and should be.

My family dont even know I'm coming yet. But with them I have to wait to tell them the exact dates so that they dont try and extend my holiday with them longer than I want to stay. I guess I should find out where Oceanview is first. I want to spend a week with them then do the other things.

You are going to love it!! I live there for 6 years in the 80's (orange county) and am taking my husband and son back for Xmas as my sister still lives there and we have not had a Xmas together since 1993! You will love Oceanview (near San Diego) and Las Vegas will blow your mind.. Are you hiring a car? That's the best way to see it all.. I think U.S drivers are so courteous....August is a hot month, so pack light...Vegas will be in the 100's but everything is air conditioned... I liked LIberace's museum....Have fun!!
