Healthy Living (may include discussion on diet and exercise) 5 Years, 10 Months ago
Sorry folks but someone has to be the first to mention the "D" word. I am wondering how everyone is going who were talking in the old RW forum about making an effort to improve their health. I have not lost much weight since then but as my main focus is not my weight but my health, that is okay. What is good for me though is that I am now regularly going to the gym and now that the weather is getting colder and darker, I am pleased that I have this habit already entrenched. I still have to really push myself to get there but once I do, man it feels good. And I feel even better when I walk out of there knowing I have done something to improve my health. My 11 y.o. daughter and I are aiming to do a triathlon together later this year so that is my goal at present.

Like you AJ I have not lost much weight but I feel much better for my 3 swims a week & my bike ride. I still hate the walking bit, but I have got a pedometer that I hang on my bra so no one sees it & that gives incentive to click up the numbers.
I went to watch my daughter in the Nelson Women's Tri last week & it was awesome. Over 700 women of all ages & sizes giving it their best shot.
I really want to be able to join in next year.
Just the incentive I needed to keep going these dark evenings
Hope you & your daughter do it I know you will be busting with pride just like my daughter was.

well done to your daughter, Fey Hag. Did she enjoy it? For yourself, if you are interested, there is no need to wait until next year to do a tri. If you are swimming x 3 weekly plus cycling you are ready now, girl. Check out: www.womenstri.co.nz or www.activewoman.co.nz And if you don't want to walk or run you can do it as part of a team if you like.

Thanks for that AJ.
I walked ( waddled shuffled) 3k around Rocks Road today & the scenery kept my mind off the pain.
My hips & knees hate me & my ankles are all puffy. I think I will stick to walking on the West Coast where I don't have to breath fumes all the way.
I am planning to try to do a duathlon at Rabbit Island over the winter & work up to the tri slowly.
Swimming is fine it's just the lack of wind half way there.
My daughter loved it --she did the "She" one in Blenheim earlier in the year & improved on her time in the Nelson one. She was over the moon. So was I.
I talked about it on the old site; she is the one who went on Zenical as a final move of desperation. She has lost over 30kg & is desperate to keep it off as she has a spinal injury.

Yes I am waving my hand in the air as being one of the ones still on the path to better health. Have some fairly big hiccups in the health department but have managed to almost loose 10% of my weight and am so much fitter I love it.
Great to read about the tri's - who knows perhaps my daughters and I might go down that track one day

I applaud all you girls who are striving for health and fitness, I really do. It's a real tonic to read about your health and fitness gains rather than the all too common focus on weight loss. To those of you who are pleased to have lost weight during the course of your healthy eating/exercise regime, good for you - I'm sure you're all intelligent enough to realise that it's the healthy lifestyle, not the weight loss per sae that's making you fitter and healthier.

Hey jode I get your drift but in my case unless I get to a safe weight then the operation I desperately need is being denied to me, so it is a case of loose the weight and then gain more health for me. And that is an important issue - surgeons not being prepared to operate on morbidly obese people.

I agree with you, Jode, about health being the main focus. Roseyone, I bet your kids are enjoying you being fitter too (your recent unwellness aside).
